Episode 18: What Defiles a Person

What if the rules you trust most to keep you safe before God are the very things pulling your heart away from Him?

In episode 18, Pastor Steven works through Mark 7:1-23 and Jesus' confrontation with the Pharisees over unwashed hands, tracing how a well-meaning devotional habit hardened into an identity marker, then into a law, until keeping the tradition mattered more than honoring father and mother. Along the way we get the long backstory on Corban, a tour of traditions that have outlived their meaning (from hostages at Buckingham Palace to snuff boxes still sitting on the Senate floor), and a frank look at why intentionality in worship is not the same thing as legalism.

Then Jesus says something genuinely radical: nothing outside a person can defile him, only what comes out of the heart. We sit with how shocking that would have sounded to a Pharisee raised on Leviticus, what it means that Jesus declares all foods clean, and how the people of God are now marked out not by diet or ceremony but by faith in Christ and the fruit of the Spirit. The challenge Pastor Steven leaves us with is uncomfortably personal: could the world look at your life and see the Spirit's work as plainly as they would a set of rules you refused to break?
