The Virgin Birth

But before they were married, Mary realized that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit…The virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which means “God is with us.” Matthew 1:18b and 23

The virgin birth is one of the Bible's most curious and profound events. The virgin birth is the fertilization of the female egg without the presence of a male sperm.  Jesus was not a man created by man. He was a man created by the Holy Spirit. Biologically speaking, this violates the human laws of reproduction. No human egg has ever been conceived without being fertilized by a male sperm. In the history of mankind, it has never been done. Case closed! God bypassed his natural laws to do this.

The virgin birth is as critical as the resurrection. Jesus proved he was God by being raised from the dead. That was the culmination of a blameless life, foretold in Scripture and proclaimed by Jesus himself. He would not be our Savior otherwise. But God’s human existence started on the front end. We have the conception that required God to confine all his power, might, and love into a lowly human body. The creator of 800 billion galaxies was confined to one human on one planet. A timeless God was limited to 33 years on Earth.  The knowledge of all creation was placed in one human brain. It would be like me becoming a Sugar Ant to communicate the power and intelligence of a human, only more. I don’t like ants, but you get the immense gap there is.

We will never know how God entered Mary’s body, but it was the beginning of the end for Jesus when it was accomplished. Jesus was not condemned to die at the hands of the Romans. He willingly gave his life when the time had come for him to do so. However, he was condemned to die at conception. His infinite, eternal nature was switched to a finite, terminal status, and he was relegated, in his human form, to die like a human.

His love for humans is on a scale I will never fully understand. His love for me is even more incomprehensible. For us “ants” to be part of God’s forever family, can only make us sing:
“Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures here below.

Praise Him above the heavenly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.” (Doxology)
